Has anyone tried to train a buckeye tree as bonsai, or know anyone that has? I've been curious about this for a little while now, though obviously I haven't put forth the effort myself.

I have seen Aesculus

I have seen Aesculus (chestnut), which is related to buckeye, but I have not seen a buckeye done before.

Buckeyes have rather large leaves, so I guess most people shy away from them for bonsai.
I have had 2 die on me in the past after they were planted in my yard. I have not tried putting on into a pot though.

If you do so, post some photos!

I know this thread is old,

I know this thread is old, but I have been potting Ohio Buckeye trees for about five years now. I have had several do fine in regular flower pots. I have yet to try one in a bonsai pot. The one worry that I would have with one as a bonsai is that Buckeyes really like their feet to be wet. They are a tree that generally grows in moist soils. If you are wanting to collect one for potting, I would recommend either getting a small one and starting with that, or slowly training a larger one in a woods over several growing seasons before removing and potting it. Buckeyes develop a deep tap root first before any other roots, just like an oak. I think one could be trained; it would just take a lot of time and patience as they are a slow growing tree. Good luck!
