Azalea

Should all the flowers be taken off of a recently repotted and root-pruned azalea? My wife decided to take the plunge into the bonsai world, and was excited to have her first tree in a pot. She likes the flowers, obviously, but not at the expense of the whole thing.

Hi Paul,
If you re potted it before it bloomed, early spring (March), then I would not let it flower until next year. Remove all the buds when they start to swell. The new shoots will start to grow around the flower buds. Did you do a lot of pruning to the roots or just placed it into another pot? I usually re pot mine in the spring (March) and will not let it flower that year. You want to let it gain strength for the following year. If I don't re pot it for a few years I let it rest every other year. What kind of azalea is it? Glad that you and your wife have caught the bug of bonsai ;-)

Yes, most references say to remove flowers to focus those resources back onto the foliage and roots.

Flowers are just for show and reproduction.

They are nice to look at though, so enjoy them for a little while, then cut them off.
