Moved my trees outside!
I keep my hardy deciduous and pines in my unheated garage over the winter.
It looks like it will be above 30F for the next week, so I decided to move them out the the bench.
I only watered them once this winter.
Some of the larger potted trees didn't get watered at all.
Has anyone else moved their trees out of winter protection yet?
My outdoor trees do not get any light in the winter.
Some say that pines need light in the winter, but other people say they do not.
My experience says they do not.
I can see how smaller trees in the mountains would be covered in snow for the entire winter and not get any sunlight either.

I hope you had some light in that garage for your pines! ;-)
I brought my deciduous trees out of my unheated shed last week. I don't put them right out in the open at first; I have a set of clear plastic-covered shelves I use. I roll the sides up so they get good airflow during the day, and seal them up at night so they don't get too chilly. All of my in-ground deciduous trees are nicely mulched in, so they don't get any special attention.
This weekend I did do some trunk-chops on some in-ground trees (a linden, two maples, and a white pine) and I've still go a dawn redwood to do this week. Over the next two weekends I might start some branch pruning/bending on some of my junipers.
Oh, a tip on watering during winter: whenever we have a big snowfall (1 to 3 times per winter) I grab a few handfuls of snow to plop into the pots of my sheltered trees. This way I remember to "water" the trees over the winter...just as often as I have to shovel my driveway!
