This workshop welcomes both beginner and experienced bonsai enthusiasts. Join Ryan for an immersive, hands-on class designed to strengthen skills and deepen understanding of bonsai development focused on native, wild-collected deciduous species. The primary focus will be elms sourced from cow pasture with excellent trunks, scars, and a ramification head start provided by the furry friends. Other options include native maples, hophornbeams, or you can bring or borrow your own tree. Techniques for deciduous development are similar across species with slight variation. We will focus on branch selection, design, deliberation around pruning and wiring, and any other questions you have. If you are new to wiring bonsai you are especially encouraged to sign up and we will be sure to cover it in detail for you.
BYOT participants and Elm tree provided participants — don’t forget to bring your tools and supplies. If tools or wire are needed, some will be available to use during the workshop instruction.
